The Legacy Trail Extension is now open to Payne Park and Fruitville Road

You can now ride on the Legacy Trail from the Venice Trail Depot all the way to Payne Park in Sarasota.   With the opening of the three new segments, we now have a continuous 22.4 mile trail extending from Shamrock Park in the south to Payne Park in the north. The southern portion includes 3.9 miles of the mainland side of the Venetian Waterway Park.  The last segment of the extension opened in March 2022.  This section extends the trail another 2.8 miles from Bahia Vista to Payne Park and Fruitville Road.

These are the three proposed North Port Connector options.

The South Powerline Trail has been upgraded and is open for recreational use.  The surface is hard packed gravel.  It is recommended that your bicycle has 1.5" wide tires.  Suspension is not necessary but it does make for a smoother ride. Be prepared because you are on your own out there.  Take your phone, water, a snack and be prepared to fix a flat if necessary.  The surface is very forgiving and flats are rare but it can be a long walk back to the parking area.  The current road connection to the Legacy Trail (shown in purple) is paved and open to the "rock pile"  Route 2 indicated by the yellow dots is 3.5 miles of hard packed gravel to a low water crossing and then beyond to to US41.  Route 3 is currently under construction and scheduled for completion by summer 2022.  It will initially connect to West Price Blvd and eventually to Warm Mineral Springs.
